About Overcast Therapy

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to provide a nonjudgmental space for Asian American children of immigrant parents to be seen, heard, and understood and to empower them to live with their authentic selves.

WHY OVERCAST THERAPY?

Overcast weather is a subjective experience. Some people hate it, while others love it. When the clouds roll in and linger for too long, it can lead to feeling down and depressed. However, when you seek past the clouds, there is sunshine hidden on the other side. The uncertainties that comes with overcast weather includes the worries and concerns of a rainy day, with the possibilities of a sunny day after all. While we cannot control the weather, we can control our attitude and how we spend our day.

It is not my goal to always see the silver lining. As a second generation Korean American, I can understand the complexities of family dynamics, cultural differences and juggling various identities. Navigating my own family dynamics and bicultural upbringing, it can be quite difficult to come to the realization and/or acceptance of “it’s just the way it is.”

However, it does not mean you have to be subjected to minimizing your needs, your feelings, your experiences. It is ALL valid; sometimes you just want to be heard, you want to be seen, you want to feel understood.

WHO IS OVERCAST THERAPY?

I am Elizabeth Sunghee Park (she/her) and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT#141095) and a Registered Art Therapist (#22-515) based in Pasadena, California. I am compassionate, nonjudgmental and empathetic in listening and understanding your lived experiences and how it shaped your perspective and patterns in life. Despite providing services via telehealth, I offer a warm and inviting presence, gentle challenges and the space to be ourselves.

As a second generation Korean-American, I was born in Los Angeles, California, while my parents immigrated from South Korea with hopes of achieving their “American Dream”. I can understand the code switching that can take place whether you are at home, school, work, church, and other social settings. This can be challenging and confusing in solidifying your identity and sense of self-worth. We can explore family dynamics, intergenerational traumas and cultural considerations that impact your relationships and sense of identity.

WHY THERAPY?

When facing challenges, we are often met with the cliches and generic phrases like: "YOLO”, “It is what it is,” or the classic line: “Life is a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna get.” You might be wrestling with the stigma of what mental health meant in your family and culture. Additionally, with social media, advanced AI technology and much information on the internet, why pay for someone to listen to my problems?

Well, for one thing: I am another human being sitting before you with undivided attention. I am here to collaborate with you on what you want to get out of therapy and how you want to live authentically. I do not have a step-by-step, cookie cutter format. What we discuss in sessions will be personalized to your unique life to help you life your true-self.
